Diet Owners Manual for Waist Management
By Omar Maskori | June 12, 2007
I spent part of today’s sunny afternoon reading a hardcover copy of “You: On A Diet: The Owner’s Manual for Waist Management” and I thought I would give you a quick book review and share my thoughts on it.
If you haven’t heard already, this is a weight loss book by doctors Michael Roizen, and Mehmet Oz. It’s written in a humorous tone with plenty of comical illustrations… a good way to make the subject of diets and weight management easier to digest.
First I will cover the positive aspects of this book.
PROS:
- They cover the medical side of why having excess body fat is bad for your health. It’s good to have perspective of the health advantages of losing weight and not just how you will look after dieting.
- They cover the “emotional triggers” to overeating and eating foods that we know are bad for gaining weight.
And now the negative aspects…
The actual DIET they recommend in this book is riddled with problems.
CONS:
- Almost all the dinner meal recipes have plenty of carbohydrates in them. This is a big mistake. Although I don’t recommend very low carb diets, I certainly do not recommend eating carbs like pasta in the evening.
- The evening snacks they recommend are also carb-based like popcorn and pita chips. As I explained above, this is a dieting mistake. If weight loss is your goal, avoid carbs at night (vegetables are fine).
- There is not enough protein in this diet plan. It’s not very low on protein but there just isn’t enough of it if you want to lose fat effectively and control your appetite.
- One of the breakfast meals they recommend having often is a bowl of Cheerios with milk. It’s ridiculous that a pair of doctors actually believe that’s good for weight loss.
THE VERDICT:
I hate to say this but the diet they recommend is just a new spin on outdated weight loss information.
There is nothing cutting edge about the weight loss science in this book. In fact, a lot of it is just plain incorrect.
To lose weight you have to eat less calories than you burn up (but don’t starve yourself). And stay away from silly crash diets!

Wow great review! I saw that guy wearing a surgeon’s costume on Oprah! He seems more like a salesman than a doctor.

Thanks Gregory!
Yes, wearing medical scrubs on Oprah (and everywhere else in the media) is just a gimmick to make the unsuspecting public think, “Hey these guys are doctors so everything they say must be right… I’ll buy their book right now!!”
Why else would a doctor wear his scrubs to a talk show… is he planning on performing surgery there?
