What’s the point of losing weight if you ruin your skin in the process?

Believe it or not, many weight loss diets are absolutely horrible for your skin. Some obviously worse than others.

By far the worst offenders are diets that are low in both protein and fat. Protein and fat are both essential to healthy skin… and hair also.

Many women who have suffered through certain crash diets have complained of hair loss and dry skin. These crash diets are always the ones that are low in fat and protein.

Avoid low fat diets!

Low fat dieting was a stupid trend of the Eighties. We know better now!

To make sure you not only lose weight… but improve your skin… follow these three tips:

Tip 1) Make sure to include plenty of healthy fats in your diet… especially Omega-3 fats. These are the fats commonly found in fish. Walnuts are also loaded with them.

Tip 2) Make sure to eat a high protein diet. In fact, base all your meals around a protein source! Say what you will, but protein is probably the most important nutrient (if you really had to pick one).

Tip 3) Make sure to drink enough water! You already know this one… but do you put it into action?

Sugar Busters Diet

The little-known Sugar Busters Diet is based on the idea that sugar is “toxic”.

The belief is that fat gain is caused by consuming sugar… causing your insulin levels to shoot up… resulting in weight gain.

This plan is based on eating foods that don’t cause large insulin spikes… and of course avoiding those foods that do cause large insulin spikes.

Now here’s the problem…

You could go on this diet and not lose any weight at all! Why not? Because just avoiding sugar won’t stop you from stuffing your face with other “Allowed Foods”… that can also cause fat gain.

For example: if you have a problem with controlling your appetite… you will most likely end up eating lots of those allowed “whole grains” (which are LOADED with carbs)… and gain a ton of weight from them!

Let’s face it, calories do count. And although I agree that you should avoid sugar… there is way more to losing fat than just doing that!

Frankly, I think the Sugar Busters Diet is BUSTED.

Oprahs Cabbage Diet

Recently a lot of people have been searching online for Oprah’s Cabbage Diet so I decided to look further and see what’s going on.

First of all I was skeptical that Oprah would have used the Cabbage Soup Diet. She has her own personal trainer (Bob Greene) so I don’t see why she would be going on a silly crash diet like this one.

Well I think my skepticism was right on because I haven’t been able to dig up anything on her having used this dieting plan.

Regardless, I’m going to talk about this seven day fad diet for those of you that have an interest in trying it out.

The Cabbage Soup Diet Plan

Day 1

Unlimited fruit (no bananas) plus cabbage soup. Beverages: cranberry juice, water, tea (no added sugar).

Day 2

Unlimited vegetables plus cabbage soup. No fruit today. Add a buttered baked potato to dinner.

Day 3

Unlimited vegetables and fruit plus cabbage soup. No baked potato today.

Day 4

Unlimited skim milk plus bananas (up to eight) plus cabbage soup.

Day 5

Beef and tomatoes plus cabbage soup and eight glasses of water.

Day 6

Unlimited beef and vegetables plus cabbage soup.

Day 7

Brown rice, vegetables, and fruit juice (unsweetened) plus cabbage soup.

My Evaluation

Where can I start with how stupid this diet is!?

I feel like my brain is going to explode thinking about all the things wrong with this idiotic diet. It’s so randomly thrown together it’s as if a two year old chimp designed it.

You will probably lose weight from how really low the calories are… but don’t get excited. Those low calories will also slow down your metabolism and you’ll gain back all the weight you lost (and then some) soon after you stop this seven day diet.

There is nothing even remotely scientific about how this diet is put together. It’s total random nonsense. This is just another stupid fad diet that slow down your metabolism by starving you.

The Cabbage Soup Diet will leave you worse off.

To lose weight you have to eat less calories than you burn up (but don’t starve yourself). And stay away from silly crash diets!

Scarsdale Diet Stuck In The Seventies

The Scarsdale Diet Plan was designed about 30 years ago in the 1970’s.

In typical crash diet fashion it drastically cuts down your calories and starves you for one to two weeks.

After that you go on a maintenance phase that is less strict which lasts for another two weeks. If you still need to lose more weight after that you have to repeat the starvation cycle.

Scarsdale Diet Menu

Here is a typical day on this eating plan:

Breakfast

1/2 grapefruit
1 piece of toast
coffee

Lunch

fruit salad (unlimited)
coffee

Supper

lean meat
vegetables (unlimited)

Ouch!

You barely get any calories!

The vegetables and fruits don’t provide many calories so your body has to survive off of a piece of toast and a piece of meat for the entire day.

I’d be willing to bet that you will lose weight on the Scarsdale Medical Diet simply from the extreme lack of calories.

Don’t get excited.

What will also happen is your metabolism will grind to a halt from the serious caloric restriction (yes, even after just a short amount of time)… and then what happens next?

I’ll tell you… you will gain back all the weight you lost and then some.

You see, your metabolism will be slower than it was before you started the diet. So you will quickly gain back the lost weight and then start gaining fat… faster than ever before!

Yay for crash diets!

The Cookie Diet Crumbles

What’s that you say? I can lose a ton of weight by eating cookies all day long?

Where can I sign up!?

This is the idea behind the Cookie Diet: eat cookies all day long and lose weight quickly.

Sounds too good to be true? Well let’s find out…

Here’s the plan: eat six cookies during the day whenever you are hungry and then a sensible dinner made up of a lean protein and a cup of vegetables.

Sounds good so far.

Except… these diet cookies taste like shoes… and really dry shoes at that.

So doesn’t that get rid of what attracted you to this diet in the first place? I mean if the cookies don’t even taste good then what the heck is the point?

Well I suppose if you can lose weight quickly that would be the real point.

So will this not-so-tasty weight loss plan deliver on the promise of fast fat loss?

Well yes… and no…

You see, the reason this diet causes fast weight loss has nothing to do with the expensive diet cookies you have to buy (around $10 a day). It has to do with the fact that your total daily calories will be about… 800 calories.

Yikes that’s low.

In fact, that’s too low.

You might be thinking, “Well if that’s what it takes to lose weight who cares if you think it’s too low?”

Well here’s why: when you lower your calories this low, you will slow your metabolism to a crawl.

Then when you get off the diet (which will be soon) and start eating a more normal amount of calories BAM you just gained all your weight back and…

You will now be gaining fat quicker than ever before.

Why?

Because you are the proud new owner of a shiny new sluggish metabolism!

Congratulations you get to be fat for life!

It’s the same story for all crash diets…

  1. Lose weight quickly through starvation
  2. Kill your metabolism
  3. Get off the diet
  4. Gain back all the weight
  5. Gain even more weight because of your slower metabolism

So as you can see, crash diets like this one will leave you fatter in the long run.

The Dr. Siegel Cookie Diet, the Hollywood Cookie Diet, and the Smart for Life Cookie Diet are all based on the same gimmick: tricking people to think they can achieve their dream body by eating cookies.

It’s just a ploy to drain your bank account folks.

This fad diet will cost you up to $400 a month… and you’ll end up fatter.

Now that’s a raw deal.

Diet Owners Manual for Waist Management

I spent part of today’s sunny afternoon reading a hardcover copy of “You: On A Diet: The Owner’s Manual for Waist Management” and I thought I would give you a quick book review and share my thoughts on it.

If you haven’t heard already, this is a weight loss book by doctors Michael Roizen, and Mehmet Oz. It’s written in a humorous tone with plenty of comical illustrations… a good way to make the subject of diets and weight management easier to digest.

First I will cover the positive aspects of this book.

And now the negative aspects…

The actual DIET they recommend in this book is riddled with problems.

I hate to say this but the diet they recommend is just a new spin on outdated weight loss information.

There is nothing cutting edge about the weight loss science in this book. In fact, a lot of it is just plain incorrect.

How To Burn 861 Calories Sitting On Your Ass

Today I don’t want to talk about diet or exercise.

Obviously diet and exercise are important but there are some real easy, sneaky tricks you can use to burn extra calories that barely require any effort at all.

Today I’m going to share with you one of these sneaky dieting tricks.

This secret fat burning tip is one that most dieters don’t know about. The great thing is that it’s easy… real easy. Not only that, but it’s a healthy, and safe weight loss trick… no dangerous diet pills, crash diets, or silly fad diets.

Here it is: I am going to show you how to make one simple change to regular drinking water that will force your body to burn calories just by drinking it.

Check this out: If you drink a single 8-ounce cup of ICE COLD water, your body will burn 7.69 calories just to heat that water up to body temperature.

Pretty cool right? Let’s exploit this interesting little fact for our own fat loss benefits.

Ok so when you drink 8 ounces of ice cold water, your body burns roughly 8 calories. If you drank the bare minimum recommended 8 glasses of water a day (for general health) but made sure your water was ice cold…

You’d be burning an extra 64 calories a day by pretty much doing nothing!

Heck you could be lying in bed doing this!

So that was if you only drank 8 cups of ice water a day… I mean, that 64 calories is good and all… but you don’t want just good enough right?

You’re a hardcore weight loss machine right!? You want every advantage you can have in losing weight and you want to squeeze them for all they’re worth! Well since you’re so motivated and want to really give your weight loss a boost, let’s go all the way with this effective dieters trick.

What you can try to do is work up to drinking around one gallon of ice cold water every day: more specifically, 16 cups. 16 cups of ice cold water means you’ll be burning 123 extra calories per day doing nothing!

Over one week you will have burned off 861 calories… just from drinking ice water!

To put those 861 calories into perspective, you burn roughly the same number of calories…

Jogging for two full hours!

Just by adding in a consistent ice water drinking habit, you can burn as many calories as if you had added in two full hours of jogging to your weekly exercise and fitness schedule. That’s amazing.

Of course, just drinking 8 cups of ice cold water a day will burn a good amount of calories too, you don’t have to drink the whole gallon and let’s face it, that’s pretty impractical.

Beyonce Liquid Diet

If you want the real scoop on the Beyonce liquid diet, you will find this post really interesting.

Before I created TripleThin I experimented with countless crash diets. One of them was the exact same liquid diet that Beyonce used to lose 20 pounds for a movie role in DreamGirls.

However I didn’t use it to lose weight, I used it to relieve my allergies (it worked rather well). I’ve used this diet about five time over the last few years (to help manage my allergies).

Here are the details…

The Beyonce crash diet is actually called the lemonade cleanse, or The Master Cleanse. Basically, for up to 10 days, aside from water you consume nothing but a special lemonade drink.

The Beyonce liquid diet drink ingredients are: freshly squeezed lemon and/or lime, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and of course water. Oh, and every morning… you have to drink a liter of warm salt water!

Why? To clean out your colon… to wash out all the fecal matter and other junk that’s stuck to your intestinal walls. This salt water will basically send you running to the bathroom with explosive bowel movements.

Not so glamorous now is it?

The lemonade cleanse should only be considered for the two following situations:

1) You only have 10 days to lose weight for a major movie role.

2) You want to improve your health by cleaning out your colon/intestines.

Oh, and if you’re under about 20 years old, you shouldn’t do it. It’s really low calorie, zero protein, zero fat, and if you are under 20, you’re still growing, so knock it off.

Listen: this diet sucks for permanent weight loss.

I typically lose 1 pound for every day I’m on the lemonade cleanse. So after 10 days I’ve lost about 10 pounds. Sounds real good right?

Wrong.

To cut to the chase: of that 10 pound weight loss, it’s very realistic to say that 5 pounds of it is waste matter that was flushed out of your colon (remember, that was the original purpose of this detox diet).

So yes, you will be ‘lighter’ if all you care about is the number on the scale, but that 5 pounds isn’t coming off your hips, buns, or tummy.

This fasting diet will provide about 800 calories a day (if you drank 8 cups of the lemonade).

Such low calories could starve off at least 2 pounds of muscle… not good since that will lower your metabolism.

You will also lose some fat of course, somewhere around 2 - 3 pounds. And you would lose some water weight.

As you can see, the actual fat loss is about 20% of all the weight you lost and…

The weight you lose on this diet you will gain back… quickly.

Yup, that’s right.

You slow down your metabolism on this crash diet. Once you go back to a regular amount of calories you will gain back the weight plus gain even more (because your metabolism is slower than it was before).

Here’s a quote from Beyonce Knowles herself:

“As soon as it was over I gained the weight back.”

There you have it, she said herself that she gained the weight back “as soon as it was over”.

So unless you want to be thinner for only a few short days… this liquid diet is not the way to go.
